After finishing this Ph.D. he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Wisconsin (1968-70) and has been Visiting professor in that university on many occasions. Prior to joining the University of Oviedo in 1972, he held the positions of Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Universities of Salamanca and Valladolid . Dr. Coca served the University of Oviedo as dean of the Faculty of Sciences (1976-80) and as chairman of the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering (1972-2004)

Dr. Coca has received the following awards: Distinguished Service Citation, University of Wisconsin at Madison (1989); Chemical Engineering-Expoquimia (Burdinola), Barcelona (1993); Solvay, Madrid (1996); Ingeniero Comerma, La Coruña (1999); and F. Cabrerizo (J.M. Moreno), Madrid (2010).

Dr. Coca has authored one book on “English for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering”, has been co-editor of an EU Leonardo da Vinci Program book on “Membrane Applications in the Food and Dairy Industry”, a NATO-ATC book on “Water purification and management”, and has coauthored over 300 technical publications and book chapters. He has supervised 78 master thesis and 48 doctoral thesis of graduate students.

He has lectured internationally at several meetings and has been an invited lecturer in many universities throughout the world and in courses sponsored by the European Union. He is the director of the International Summer Course in Chemical Engineering offered at the University of Oviedo over 12 times. He has been the director of the NATO-ATC course offered in Oviedo (Spain) in 2009 and the NATO-ATC course that will be offered in Huelva (Spain) in 2011 .

Dr Coca is the Spanish representative in the Working parties of "Fluid separation" and "Membranes" of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and chairman of the Section on Separation Technology (since 2007). He has been member of the CNRS section “Sciences pour l'ingenieur” and member of the editorial/scientific committee of the journals: "Technology Today" (since 1990), " Chemical Engineering Research and Design " (1995-2010) and " Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy " (2002-2007)

Dr. Coca is consultant to industry on liquid-liquid extraction related processes, membrane technology and hybrid separation processes and interfacial phenomena (O-W emulsions). Recently he has been involved on incineration of solid wastes assessment.
